Due to COVID-19, we have temporarily suspended in-person WISC-V, WPPSI-IV, and Woodcock Johnson testing. We are very effectively administering the WISC, WJ, and other measures to children ages 6+ via telehealth. Please ask! We're happy to share our success with remote test administration as well as the data supporting its use. When it becomes safer to interact closely (which is required for proper child-centered in-person engagement on these tasks), we will be ecstatic to resume. For now, we know that the experience matters and impacts results. Being able to participate without a mask, free from the anxiety of distancing, and in the comfort of home seems best.
We offer the required cognitive testing for students seeking admission to independent/private schools. Typically, applicants for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten take the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence - Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV -- pronounced whip-see), while Elementary applicants ages 6 and above are given the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Occasionally, schools would like to see academic subject testing or prefer that other assessment tools be used. We are happy to accommodate and can make suggestions for special populations (i.e. very young, multilingual, foreign-born, gifted children). WPA follows the protocol established by a group of Admissions Directors, which entails administering selected subtests that were identified for Admissions purposes. On occasion, if the evaluator is concerned that a single data sample within a given domain may not be sufficient, or if there are factors that compromise standardized administration, additional subtests may be given based on clinical judgement. We're flexible--please contact us with questions or preferences!
Both Wechsler scales are interactive, diverse in their components, and created to be developmentally appropriate and engaging. They are standardized such that they should be administered the same way to each child and results are calculated by comparing young test-takers to same-aged peers who participated in test development. We are happy to discuss the psychometrics, so feel free to ask! Our evaluators aim to make the testing experience a positive one for all. We are decidedly child-focused in our approach and because we know that performance is enhanced by comfort and impeded by stress and worry, we genuinely pay attention to each young student's unique needs and styles. Expertise in test administration allows us to support children to do their very best! Experienced clinical judgment and knowledge shows in our methods as well as in observations and analysis offered through informative, personalized reports. standard fees:

availability: Children perform at their peak in the morning. We encourage families to select an appointment time that is most in sync with the young student's typical schedule. Testing is offered most mornings Monday through Saturday (8:00 am to 12:00 noon). Saturday appointments can be reserved by full payment in advance.
response time: During the busiest points in the admissions cycle, it may take up to two weeks to receive results. However, in most cases, you will receive a detailed report about your child's performance within a few days of assessment. Selecting the expediting option (+ $75.00 when available) guarantees results within four business days.
on-line booking: This feature is currently closed. It will re-open in August 2020. In the interim, please call our office at 202-374-5756 or send us an e-mail ([email protected]). We reserve spots (off-calendar) for siblings and prior clients. The scheduler cannot always reflect our flexibility (i.e. an 8:30 am appointment may be able to start at 9:00 am). In general, we limit testing to one "early" and one "later" slot each morning (roughly a 9:00 and an 11:00) so that every appointment is buffered by plenty of transition time--we're fresh and you're not rushed! Once you book on line, the tester will be in touch directly and explain next steps. There is no charge made to your card unless you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment (please see fees page for details-- we require rescheduling in the event of illness). Payment is due at the time of appointment by cash/check. Please let us know if you need help navigating!
