Couples Therapy
Often times couples, both married and unmarried, experience difficulty in their relationship and feel unable to conquer their issues on their own. Washington Psychology Associates works with various types of couples to address conflict and communication within the relationship. We assist couples in learning how to negotiate discord, express needs, and listen effectively. Sometimes couples need help with a particular issue or crisis and require only a few sessions, while others need to address longer standing relationship dynamics. Either way, couples therapy can help you gain greater insight into your relationship to make more informed decisions together.
Family Therapy
It is commonplace that when an individual is experiencing emotional or psychological distress it may have a significant impact on the other members of the family as well. Often times, families can get caught in a negative cycle and don’t know how to get themselves back into a healthy routine. For instance, a child may be doing poorly in school, losing self-confidence, and becoming withdrawn and/or starting to act out. His parents’ frustration level rises as they try various tactics with no improvement. Everyone in the family experiences the tension, and they don’t know where else to turn. In a case such as this and many others, Family Therapy can be a very helpful tool in learning to understand how each family member is being affected, and it can provide a space to speak openly about frustrations, concerns, needs, and solutions. Washington Psychology Associates works with families to assist in this process and helps bring to light underlying dynamics that may be contributing factors, as well as identifying more adaptive and beneficial ways of supporting one another.
